No matter the location, drinking water is one of the most important resources to a community. In the Laramie area, the Casper Aquifer supplies approximately 60% of the City’s drinking water and 100% to those homeowners that fall within the Casper Aquifer recharge area.
The community has noted the importance of the Casper Aquifer. Since 2002, the community has relied on the Casper Aquifer Protection Plan and accompanying ordinance to protect our water supply.
In January of 2007, the City of Laramie enacted a building moratorium in an effort to further protect the water in the Casper Aquifer. The moratorium restricted all development within the Casper Aquifer Protection Area for one year. Further, City staff was instructed to review and update the current Casper Aquifer Protection Plan.
Later, in July, collaboratively the City of Laramie and Albany County developed a MOU to hire consultants, Wittman Hydro Planning Associates, to complete an update to the plan. The update will assess the current plan and ordinance and its ability to sufficiently protect the aquifer.
