The City of Laramie offers swim lessons taught by American Red Cross Certified instructors. Group lessons are available for children ages 6 months to 12 years old. Lessons for the current season are posted in our Program Guide and available for registration On-line.
Our Learn to Swim programs begins at the very basic of water safety, water exploration and swimming readiness and progresses through levels as skills are gained and mastered. Water safety is interwoven and focused on with each level.
Aqua Tots: A parent and child class designed to help prepare young children to be comfortable in the water, teach swimming readiness skills, water exploration and water safety.
Preschool: A class that engages children ages 3 and 4 years old to explore the water in a safe manner while learning basic swimming skills, develop independent movement through the aquatic environment.
Level 1: A beginner level that introduces basic aquatic skills that the participant will build on as they progress through the Learn to Swim Program. Participants will develop a positive and safe attitude towards the aquatic environment. Level 1 skills overlap with Preschool and may be repeated for skill mastery.
Level 2: Building on the foundational skills gained in Level 1, participants learn to glide and float without support. Proper body position, breath control , and alternating arm and leg action are taught. This level may be repeated for skill mastery.
Level 3: Expands on building proficient swimming skills with new stroke development and a strong focus on water safety survival. This level may be repeated for skill mastery.
Level 4: Participants increase their endurance and skill proficiency with new stroke development such as side stroke and butterfly, along with head first entries. This level is held mostly in the 8 Lane Pool or deeper water, and participants are expected to be able to tread water and swim longer distances.
Level 5: Participants continue to increase endurance and refinement of all six strokes (front crawl, back crawl, elementary back stroke, breast stroke, butterfly and side stroke.)
Level 6: Offers participants options to meet specific goals and interests. Through stroke refinement, participants are prepared for more advanced course, or other aquatics activities such as competitive swimming and diving, swimming for fitness and exercise, or personal water safety.
Private Swim Lessons
Fall Private Swim Lesson Registration will open on Tuesday, September 19th at 9:00am.
WE WILL NOT BE OFFERING ANY PRIVATE LESSONS BETWEEN AUGUST 12th AND OCTOBER 15th!
***We have changed our process for taking Private Swim Lessons requests! We think you'll find the new way super easy and no more waiting!***
Participants experience a customized lesson plan to efficiently and effectively meet the participants goals. The instructor considers their abilities and water comfort level to develop a lesson plan that focuses on specific skills from a multitude of levels. Water safety is interwoven into all lessons as a point of discussion and practice. If you have never swam before, or need extra help to perfect a stroke, private lessons can help you. Private lessons are available for all lesson levels, are 30 minutes each lesson and are set up based on our instructor's availability and your scheduling needs. You can select between 4 and 8 days that show as available for each instructor on our registration calendar. We ask that when scheduling your lesson sessions, that they be consistent with the same day/time combination as much as possible.
Private lessons are for participants that are at least 3 years old or older. Semi-Private lessons (two siblings at one lesson) may also be scheduled, however both siblings must be of a similar age (no more than 24-month age gap) and aquatic skill ability, as well as have similar goals to focus the lessons around. To register for a Semi-Private lesson, register ONE child and email us with the name and birthdate of the second child you would like added to the registration.
Closely follow the registration instructions outlined on our online registration page. Paper registrations will no longer be accepted. If you need registration assistance please call the Recreation Center at 307-721-5269.
Registration is open through the year. If there are no available time slots for any of our instructors, please check back regularly, as we will continually be updating this to provide more options as we add more instructors. There will not be a Waitlist!
If this does not meet your needs, please email aquaticsassistants@cityoflaramie.org to discuss other fully customized options.
