Laramie’s Recycle Program for Frying & Cooking Oil

In December 2015, the City of Laramie initiated a Recycle Program for Frying & Cooking Oil in partnership with the Laramie Moose Lodge and Platte Valley Pet Foods, Inc. Green Barrels are in the alley behind the Moose Lodge at 409 South 3rd Street in Laramie. During 2016 a total of 790 gallons of cooking oil and fats were collected. Approximately 150 gallons were from the forest service man camp at the Walden fire.

A new collection site will be set up this year at J’s Steakhouse, 3225 Grand Avenue, on the north side of the parking lot.  This location will accommodate the people that live farther from the downtown area. Collection will continue as before at the Moose lodge.  The public is welcome to deposit waste frying and cooking oil at both locations. Please remember that this program is not for engine oil or petroleum products.

Per the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), 65% of sewer backups are related to fats, oils and grease. This program will reduce clogging issues with private and public sewer service lines and keep liquid waste out of the landfill. Recycling used cooking oil is a viable option for disposal as the waste cannot be accepted at the landfill.  Interestingly, 1 tablespoon of fat, oil or grease daily down a drain equates to 12 pounds annually. One gallon of oil potentially can contaminate 1,000,000 gallons of water.
